The 500 year anniversary of Thomas More’s Utopia gave us a chance not only to reflect on whether utopias are still relevant, but also to look at what residue they left on the development of cultures as a whole. As utopias branched into a variety of literary genres such as science fiction, fantasy, dystopia, speculative fiction, pulp fiction and New Weird they gave us the confidence to experiment with their ideas in other cultural practices, satisfying the human need to constantly transform and transcend it’s identity. To fantasize is to change, but to fantasize is also just to play. It is hard to tell where the naïve imagination ends and really progressive thinking begins.
In More I draw on the Pandrogyne project of Genesis P Orridge and his partner Lady Jaye Breyer, in which they decide to give their individual identities up in the name of a third and common being half way between the two of them, a NASA project described by Yuval Noah Harari which attempts to wire brains to each other, and finally the intimacy of my relationship with long-term collaborator Magda Jędra. Two are analog transhumanist technologies and the third is a digital one. Even though their ontological status is very different they all express a desire to negate the archaic myth of the human individual. Our choreographic practices deploy these phenomena and science fiction fantasies in order to test whether certain transhuman and post-individual fantasies can be embodied, pulling them away from the realm of fiction towards the realm of reality.

New work called Actions to relate to Verbs presented at the 14th Body/Mind (C/U) Festival in Warsaw

The project is inspired by a 1960s „Verb List Compilation: Actions to Relate to Oneself” by sculptor Richard Serra. Working with students from the Warsaw Dance Department, Ramona Nagabczyńska has utilized Serra’s list and strategy.
Serra’s compilation is a score, a list of tasks to be accomplished. The dancers subject consecutive items from that list to personal interpretation. They are forced to endlessly negotiate in order to arrive with a joint motion system. Playing in the theater rehearsal studio turns it into a space of dialogue, exhibiting the result as a form of compromise. Just like in Serra’s sculptures, where object properties are perceived rather than noticed. It is difficult here to differentiate between the aesthetic vs. the social, the private vs. artistic, the matter vs. the subject – idiosyncratic choreography is formed.
The performance takes place on the 1.10.2015 at the Powszechny Theatre in Warsaw.

New (Dis)Order performed at the Boguslawski Theatre in Kalisz in the frame of Choreografia Mysli

The municipal Boguslawski Theatre of Kalisz, once a very important place for cutting edge Polish theatre is on a mission to revive it’s former position by bringing in new young theatre, and recently- new dance. Katarzyna Koslacz- the new young curator of the theatre has collaborated with Berlin based dance curator and dramaturge Mateusz Szymanowka in order to create the season of dance coined Choreografia Myśli (choreography of thought). The season combines some of the newest and most exciting creators of Polish dance, amongst them: Pawel Sakowicz, Agata Siniarska and Ramona Nagabczyńska.

New (Dis)Order will be shown on the small stage of the Boguslawski Theatre on 12.06.2015 at 18.00.

New (Dis)Order at Teatr Polski in Bydgoszcz in the frame of Miedzynarodowe Forum Tanca (International Dance Forum)

New (Dis)Order will be presented at the most important theatre venue of Bydgoszcz, Poland- the Teatr Polski (Polish Theatre). For the past few years the venue has been a hub for some of the most groundbreaking theatre in Poland. The cycle of events called Międzynarodowe Forum Tańca is part of a larger scheme initiated by the theatre to bring in a dialogue between various areas of the performing arts. Other than Ramona’s New (Dis)Order, the programme will include work by Iza Szostak, Agata Maszkiewicz, Renata Piotrowska, Agata Siniarska amongst others. The programme is curated by Marta Keil, who is one of the most important Polish theatre, dance and performance art curators of her generation. Her work extends beyond the borders of Poland.

New (Dis)Order will be presented on 26.04.2015 at 19.00 on the small stage. There will be an after talk with Ramona led by Marta Keil after the show.

RE//accumulation at the Uovo Performing Arts Festival 2015 in Milan, Italy 

RE//accumulation, which has been performed extensively since 2012 has been invited to the most renowned festival for the performing arts in Milan. Ramona will perform it at the Teatro Franco Parenti in Milan on March 26th at 21.00.

Ramona Nagabczynska on the faculty of Warsaw Dance Department

Warsaw Dance Department is a professional contemporary dance training programme in Warsaw created and led by renowned Israeli dancer and choreographer Irad Mazliah. It is the first three year full-time professional dance training programme ever to be established in the capital of Poland. The programme opened in February 2015.

The aim of the course is to facilitate each participant’s personal growth. The faculty provides individual approach and tutoring to stimulate personal process of improvement. Lessons are divided into various technique lessons in the morning and 2-week movement research modules in the afternoon. The teacher of this research changes every one to two weeks.

Ramona will teach both Contemporary Dance Technique and Movement Research between 22.06.2015 and 03.07.2015.

 

New (Dis)Order at CSW Centre for Contemporary Art in Warsaw in the frame of Performance Week

New (Dis)Order was presented at CSW- Ujazdowski Castle (Centre for Contemporary Art in Warsaw) on 19.12.2014 at 18.30 in the CCA Laboratory Building. The performance was part of Performance Week, which is the first edition of a cycle of new dance presentations hosted by CSW and curated by Paulina Kowalczyk.

New (Dis)Order at Cricoteka, Krakow as part of the Choreographic Machine

New (Dis)Order will be presented at Cricoteka, Krakow on 24.11.2014 at 19.00. The performance will be part of the Choreographic Machine, which is a programme of new dance curated by Anna Krolica.

The series of performances framed by the term Choreographic Machine is a continuation of the search for meeting points between the work of Tadeusz Kantor and contemporary Polish choreography. Anna Krolica, one of Poland’s leading dance curators created the first edition of the program in 2013 as part of the project Who Inspires? Tadeusz Kantor! In that edition, the starting point for creating the programme was recognising a (nearly) continuous presence of the notion of the body in Kantor’s work — especially in the context of his happenings and theatrical experiments.

Improvised performance Take what you need, nothing less by Centrum w Ruchu presented at the Warsaw Dance Platform

Centrum w Ruchu will present an improvised performance called Take what you need, nothing less at the Mazovian Cultural Institute in Warsaw as part of the Warsaw Dance Platform. The performance will take place on 17.10.2014 at 19.00.

Other than Ramona Nagabczynska, Weronika Pelczynska and Marysia Stoklosa, who are all members of the Centrum w Ruchu group, the performance will be performed and created by guest dancer Irad Mazliah, guitarist Marek Kępa and percussionist Dominik Mokrzewski.

 

The Way Things Dinge at the Body/Mind Festival 2014

A fragment of the durational performance The Way Things Dinge, the latest work of Ramona Nagabczyńska will be presented at the 13th edition of the Body/Mind International Contemporary Dance Festival. The performance is part an accompanying event called New Communities in Europe. Part of this event is a panel, to which Ramona has also been invited in the role of panelist.

This year’s edition is held at Teatr Sudio, Teatr Powszechny, Zachęta and public spaces between 18-28 September 2014.

The Way Things Dinge will be shown at 17.30 in Teatr Studio in the Palace of Culture and Science in Warsaw, Poland.

 

Ramona Nagabczynska is danceWEBer 2014

The danceWEB Scholarship Programme 2014 takes place from July 16 – August 20, 2014 in the frame of ImPulsTanz – Vienna International Dance Festival unter the mentorship of Austrian choreographer Chris Haring, who was a scholarship recipient in 1997 himself, and French choreographer David Wampach.

Ramona was amongst the 63 young dancers and/or choreographers from all around the world to be granted the danceWEB scholarship in 2014.

 

New (Dis)Order at the Gdansk Dance Festival 2014

New (Dis)Order, which is part of Aerowaves 2014 will be presented on the 14th of June at 20.00 at Club Zak in Gdańsk.

The performance is part of the Gdansk Dance Festival, which is the most important dance festival of the region. It has existed since 2002 and programs both Polish and international dance companies.

 

The Way Things Dinge at the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw

The newest work of Ramona Nagabczynska The Way Things Dinge, will premiere at the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw on Emilii Plater 51 on the 10/05/2014. This durational performance will start at 18.30 and finish at 21.30, with the final set happening at 20.30.

This new performance by Ramona Nagabczynska is a study of the mechanisms and dramaturgy of physical laws, which are of interest to the artist as a potential source of aesthetic and choreographic matter. Nagabczyńska makes an attempt to redefine the ontology of object and corporeality in confrontation with forces of coincidence and the performer’s intentional actions. She explores the idea of autopoeisis, making it a common denominator of all physical being. The starting point for her considerations is the canonic work of the Swiss artists Fischli & Weiss The Way Things Go.

 

New (Dis)Order at the Aerowaves Springforward Festival in Umea, Sweden

New (Dis)Order by Ramona Nagabczynska, which is part of Aerowaves 2014 will be presented at the Spring Forward Festival on 26.04.2014 at
Midgårdsskolan, Valhalla at 16.30. This year’s edition will take place in Umea, Sweden between 24-27.04.2014 organised by the Norrlands Operan.

Spring Forward is an annual dance festival in which young dancers and choreographers showcase their works to the public. The festival visits a new city every year. In the capital of culture year 2014 it is coming to Umeå. The festival is an initiative of Aerowaves – a European dance network that is active in 36 countries. During Spring Forward it will be possible to make contact with dancers from throughout the whole of Europe.

 

RE//accumulation at the KRoki Festival in Krakow

The festival will take place in the Malopolska Garden of Arts in Krakow between the 22nd and 30th of March. This year’s edition’s theme, which is curated by Jadwiga Majewska and Katarzyna Bester, is ‘in between’- in between various different genres of performing arts.
The programme includes Teatr Dada von Bzdülöw, Agata Maszkiewicz, Anna Nowicka, Emio Greco/Pieter C. Scholten, Virpi Pahkinen, Gob Squad, Jonathan Burrows and Matteo Fargion amongst others.
Ramona Nagabczynska’s Re:akumulacja will be performed on the 29th of April at 19.00.

Ramona Nagabczynska among AEROWAVES’ Priority Companies 2014

Aerowaves is a network that seeks out new dance from younger choreographers, and offers them performances in other European countries. The annual Aerowaves meeting took place in Lublin from 24 to 27 October 2013, gathering 38 members of the network, representing 25 European countries. Of 419 eligible applications, 20 were selected as Priority Companies, including New (Dis)Order by Ramona Nagabczyńska. The selected artists hail from 14 countries. Many of them will be presented in our next Spring Forward festival 24-27 April 2014 in Umeå, Sweden as a part of its celebrations as European Capital of Culture.

Ramona is the third ever company in the history of Polish dance to have ever entered aerowaves. The next aerowaves performance of New (Dis)Order will take place in Umeå, Sweden on the 26th of April 2014. It will part of the Spring Forward Festival.
